Short introduction about KJ

KJ is a company with special knowledge within hydraulics and machinery. The company supplies and services equipment for the fishing industry, aquaculture, as well as logistic business and construction industries. As one of the bigger companies on the machinery front in the Faroe Islands, KJ also supplies equipment and services for international markets, for example to Iceland, Scotland, Shetland, Denmark and Norway.

The headquarters are in Kambsdalur, with departments in Tórshavn, in Ljósá and in Fuglafjørður. Additionally KJ has a sister company in Denmark, called KJ Supply.

KJ is one of the biggest Faroese companies today, and has been a vital suppliar for the Faroese fishing fleet for several years. In the last couple of years KJ has developed into a key supplier in several other industries, for example the aquaculturial, construction and contractors industry.

1978
Kári Johannesen, Mechanical Workshop is established
Establishment fee for a sole proprietorship for 3.000 DKK is submitted on September 21st 1978. In the beginning the company’s workshop was in the basement of Kári Johannesen’s own house in Fugjafjørður.
1983
First apprentice
The company’s first apprentice was Birgir Samuelsen. He started his apprenticeship on January 2nd 1983. Today, Birgir works as Technical Director at KJ.
1987
New workshop in Kambsdalur constructed
The company’s first workshop building is constructed in Kambsdalur. The building was put into operation in 1988.
1988
Kári Johannesen, Mechanical Workshop is establised as a liability company
July 12th 1988 – sole proprietorship is changed into P/F (liability company) Kári Johannesen, Mechanical Worshop
1992
Hydro Tech Sp/f is establised
In 1992 Hydro Tech Sp/f in Eiði is established. Kári Johannesen and Absalon Wolles were co-owners of this company.
1999
First catamaran built by KJ
First newbuilding, the catamaran Sneis, built and presented to P/F Sjólaksi in Kollafjørður. Hydro-Tech built the catamaran.
2002
First woman in the country becomes certified technician
On the 2nd of February 2002 the first woman in the Faroe Islands gets her technician certification. This was Sheila S. Sóldal from Fuglafjørður. She had her apprenticeship at KJ’s workshop in Kambsdalur.
2004
Hydro-Tech joins forces with Kári Johannesen, Mechanical Workshop
26th of January 2004 – P/F Hydro-Tech on Eiði joins forces with P/F Kári Johannesen, Mechanical Workshop into one company
2004
The name “KJ Hydraulik” is established
As P/F Hydro-Tech and P/F Kári Johannesen, Mechanical Workshop join forces as one company, the company changes its name to “KJ Hydraulik”
2006
Sp/f Norð Trukk acquired and merges with P/F KJ Hydraulik
KJ Hydraulik purchases Sp/f Norð Trukk. This is the start of working with direct sales and service delivery for the construction industry and other land-based industry.
2006
Head quarters site is bought
In November 2006 P/F KJ Hydraulik purchases a large building from the company JT Electric on Kambsdalur. The head quarters hosts the company’s sales-, finance- and administration department.
2008
The slipway in Fuglafjørður is purchased
In 2008 KJ Hydraulik purchased the slipway in Fuglafjørður. This served as a great advantage to the growing need of working with catamarans.
2010
KJ Supply in Denmark is established
KJ Hydraulik founded a sister company in Denmark, called KJ Supply. This serves as a great advantage in the purchase department.
2013
Ólavur is wins ‘Leader of the Year’ award
The company’s director, Ólavur Asafsson Olsen, wins the ‘Leader of the Year’ award in the private sector in 2013.
2013
KJ purchases building site á Hjalla 33
KJ acquires a new department site á Hjalla 33 in Tórshavn. The work starts in August the next year.
2016
‘Company of the Year’
The Faroese House of Industry awards P/F KJ Hydraulik on November 30th 2016 the prestigious title ‘Company of the Year’.
2020
KJ Hydraulik is shortened to ‘KJ’
A decision is taken to take the word ‘hydraulik’ out of the company’s name, as the company’s work is vastly changed through the years and is now about much more than hydraulics.
2023
Viggo Johannesen becomes director
In May 2023 Viggo Johannesen is appointed director of KJ. He is now co-director in of the company, alongside Ólavur Asafsson Olsen.
