KJ Secures New Agreement with Bakkafrost for new Catamaran

Bakkafrost and KJ have officially a new agreement for the acquisition of new catamaran, which is set to enhance Bakkafrost’s operational capabilities in the aquaculture industries. This vessel will be the 66th catamaran constructed by KJ, and the 36th catamaran in KJ’s comprehensive portfolio of catamarans built for Bakkafrost.

The newly commissioned catamaran will boast dimensions of 20 meters in length and 9 meters in width, aligning with the specifications of the previously delivered Miðenni, which was entrusted to Bakkafrost’s fleet in December 2023. While it will mirror the Miðenni in size and design, this new catamaran will incorporate subtle modifications and enhancements to optimize its performance and utility. After thorough planning and consideration, the project has moved forward to the active construction phase, with work on the hull now underway.

Viggo Johannesen, the CEO at KJ, comments on the evolving trends in the Faroese aquaculture industry, noting that “there has been a positive progression over the years, leading to a demand for larger service vessels at sea-based farming sites. The necessity for more expansive deck space and larger deck cranes means that we must also provide larger catamarans. Currently, our largest model measures 20×9 meters,” Mr. Johannesen explains.
