KJ Delivers New Catamaran to Bakkafrost

Last week, KJ delivered another new catamaran to Bakkafrost, ready to support operations at fish farming sites across the Faroe Islands. The new vessel has been specially equipped to handle the wide range of demanding tasks that are part of daily operations at a Faroese fish farm.

The delivery marks another milestone in the long-standing cooperation between KJ and Bakkafrost. The first catamaran was delivered to Bakkafrost in 1999, and since then, KJ has built and delivered a number of vessels to the company.

The experience gained through this long-term cooperation has also contributed to the continuous development of KJ’s catamarans, allowing the vessels to evolve in line with the changing requirements of the aquaculture industry.

Equipped for a wide range of operations

The new catamaran measures 20 metres in length and 9 metres in width and has been designed with a strong focus on workspace, safety and efficient working conditions for the crew.

The spacious deck provides considerable flexibility for carrying out a variety of operations at fish farming sites. The vessel is equipped with two Palfinger deck cranes – a PK90002 and a PK33002 – as well as a 25-tonne deck winch, four 3-tonne capstans and a hydraulic coupling plate holder.

This equipment makes the catamaran well suited for handling nets, mooring systems and other equipment used in day-to-day aquaculture operations.

The vessel is also equipped with a dynamic positioning (DP) system, enabling the crew to maintain the vessel’s position during operations and providing greater stability and control when working at sea.

Plenty of power on board

The catamaran is powered by two FPT C16 engines, each delivering 500 hp. It is also fitted with bow and stern thrusters and two Himoinsa 115 kVA generators. Together with the vessel’s other technical systems, this provides the power and capacity required for demanding operations.

Catamarans play an important role in the daily operation of modern fish farms, and requirements for equipment, operational capacity and safety have increased considerably in recent years. These developments are reflected in the new vessel, which has been designed as a robust and versatile working platform capable of handling a wide range of tasks.
